So Far So Good
1: SUMMER OF ī69
I got my first
real six string, bought it at the five and dime,
played it till my fingers bled, was the summer of sixty-nine.
Me and some guys from school had a band and we tried real hard.
Jimmy quit and Jody got married, I shoulda known weīd never get far.
But when I look back now, that summer seemed to last forever
and if I had the choice, ya, Iīd always wanna be there,
those were the best days of my life.
Ainīt no use in complaininī when you got a job to do,
spent my eveninīs down at the drive-in
and thatīs when I met you, ya.
Standinī on your mamaīs porch, you told me that youīd wait forever,
oh! and when you held my hand I knew that it was now or never...
...Back in the summer...
...Man, we were killinī time, we were young and restless,
we needed to unwind, I guess nothinī can last forever...no.
And now the times are changinī, look at everything thatīs come
and gone. Sometimes when I play that old six string I think about
ya īn wonder what went wrong...
2: STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART
I could start dreaminī but itīd never end.
As long as youīre gone we may as well pretend
Iīve been dreaminī straight from the heart.
You said itīs easy but whoīs to say
that weīd be able to keep it this way.
But itīs easier cominī...Give it to me...
...Tell me we can make another start.
You know Iīll never go as long as I know itīs cominī...
...Iīll see you on the street some other time
and all our words would just fall outta line while weīre dreaminī...
...Tell me we can make one more start...
3: ITīS ONLY LOVE
When the feelinī is ended there ainīt no use pretendinī.
Donīt ya worry, itīs only love.
When your world has been shattered ainīt nothinī else matters.
It ainīt over, itīs only love, and thatīs all, yeah!
When your heart has been broken, hard words have been spoken,
it ainīt easy, but...
...And your life ainīt worth livinī, and youīre ready to give in.
Just remember that...you can live without the aggravation,
ya gotta wanna win...you keep lookinī back in desperation,
over and over and over again...Ya...
4: THIS TIME
I think about her all the time,
sheīs my fantasy, an image burninī in my mind, callinī out to me.
While my imaginationīs runninī wild, yeah!
things are getting clearer, this time everything is alright,
no way sheīs gonna get away...
...is easy and day Iīm gonna make her mine.
Iīve thought of every word Iīd say, give or take a few,
but she turns and slowly walks away, what am I supposed to do?
Hey! turn up your radio! Oh! thereīs somethinī I want you to know...
...Well itīs hard to take cause sheīs miles away
and Iīve waited a long time but the feelinīs right and,
darlinī, one of these nights, yeah! Iīm gonna let you know...
5: RUN TO YOU
She says her love for me could never die
but thatīd change if she ever found out about you and I.
Oh! but her love is cold, it wouldnīt hurt her if she didnīt know,
īcause when it gets too much I need to feel your touch,
Iīm gonna run to you...
...Cause when the feelinīs right...all night...
...Sheīs got a heart of gold, sheīd never let me down,
but youīre the one that always turns me on,
you keep me cominī īround.
I know her love is true, but itīs so damn easy makinī love to you!
I got my mind made up, I need to feel your touch...
...Iīm gonna stay all night...
6: CUTS LIKE A KNIFE
Drivinī home this eveninī coulda sworn we had it all worked out,
you had this boy believinī way beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Then I heard it on the street,
I heard ya might of found somebody new, well, who is he, baby...?
...and tell me what he means to you!
I took it for granted but
how was I to know that youīd be lettinī go?
Now it cuts like a knife, but it feels so right...
...Thereīs times Iīve bin mistaken...
...Iīve thought Iīve bin misunderstood.
So wait a minute, darlinī, canīt you see we did the best we could?
This wouldnīt be the first time that things have gone astray.
Now, youīve thrown it all away...
7: KIDS WANNA ROCK
Turned on the radio, sounded like a disco.
Musta turned the dial for a couple of miles
but I couldnīt find no rock nī roll.
This computerized crap ainīt gettinī me off,
everywhere I go the kids wanna rock,
London to L.A., talk about the New Wave.
For a couple of bucks ya get a weird haircut
and waste your life away around the world or around the block...
...Get me my D.J., I got somethinī heīs gotta play,
wanna hear it, I canīt wait so turn it up...
...Kick down the barricades, listen what the kids say.
From time to time people change their minds
but the music is here to stay.
Iīve seen it all from the bottom to the top...
8: HEAT OF THE NIGHT
I was caught in the crossfire of a silent scream
where one manīs nightmare is another manīs dream.
Pull the cover up high and pray for the morninī light
īcause youīre livinī alone in the heat of the night.
Met a man with a message from the other side,
couldnīt take the pressure, had to leave it behind.
He said itīs up to you, you can run or you can fight.
Ya, thatīs right, better leave it...theyīll be cominī around,
thereīll be lookinī for answers, theyīll be chasinī you down...
Where ya gonna hide when it all comes down? Donīt look back!
donīt ever turn around! Had to pay the piper to call the tune,
said heīd be back someday, said heīd be back real soon.
Pull the shades down low, youīll know when the time is right,
when youīre lyinī...
